Prenatal Checkup Cost ----WOW!

As I have no insurance plan covering on pregnancy-related cost at this moment, we have to self-pay for all the necessary checkup at this stage.  We know that the bill could be scary but do not have much idea about how scary it could be. The clinic will not give you an estimated number so it's hard to find out before you've got your first bill.  The one visit we did on early May costs us US$11xx --- just a simple simple blood test and a 20-minute consultation time with a registered nurse. This was really out of our expectation. Though the service was good, it shouldn't be charged at such a high rate. I can actually have a return trip to HK and get the check done at this amount.

Thanks God that there was one very helpful councilor working in the clinic who gave us the clue of how to reduce the cost. She recommended us to apply for the Yale hospital Freecare programme with the fact that our income is at the low-rank. So end up, we do not need to bear the cost at our own. What a relief.
Pray that we could fix the insurance issue when we arrived west coast so that we do not need to worry about the medical expenses again.

Congratulations!

Congratulations! Today is Hugo's defense day. Finally another great milestone has been completed and our baby has reached week 12.

Now starting to resume my appetite but will still throw up  occasionally before I go to bed.  I will always keep a plastic bag with me all the time.

Will need to start packing things in the coming two weeks. Becoz I can't move heavy items...Hugo will do all the labor work. He is really kind and he shares most of the housework in the recent days. Three cheers to you, Dad-to-be!

Btw, we have already informed the core family on Mother's Day. They are all thrilled. My dad reminds me not to 移床, 通渠& 打釘子.

Twinkle Star 閃星星

Have the 1st registered nurse appointment today. She checked the blood pressure and body weight and for the very first time - A preliminary scan of the baby's image.

In fact, I can't see it clearly as I have lay down and the screen has some reflection looking from my angle..I should have asked the nurse to turn the monitor a bit...but my head was so blank at that time. When she explained what's on the screen..I just keep nodding my head. But Hugo said he saw it clearly. There's a twinkle star blinking -- that's our baby's heart! Hugo 說...一閃一閃很明亮的. 那一刻..感覺很奇妙..實實在在的有一個小生命在肚子中...心在不停的跳動.....好可愛.

Still do not have appetite and keep throwing up. I am not sure whether it's due to the prenatal vitamins..Fear of taking the vitamins now. Sometimes when I feel really bad, I just skip it for that day. But then I feel guilty and try to pick it up again the following day. 總之, 食親維他命都有點怕.

P.S. 唔鍾意飲橙汁...唔鍾食西餐.

Morning sickness tied to higher child IQ

第9周啦...仲係無咩胃口...成日作嘔.找到一篇有關的文章...安慰一下自己.

Fri, Jul 31, 2009 (Reuters Health) — Children whose mothers had morning sickness during pregnancy may go on to have sharper minds than their peers, a small study suggests.

Researchers found that among 121 Canadian children between the ages of 3 and 7, those whose mothers had suffered morning sickness scored higher, on average, on certain tests of IQ, memory and language skills.

In addition, mothers' use of the drug diclectin -- prescribed in Canada for morning sickness -- did not diminish the effects. In fact, children whose mothers had used the medication showed the highest average scores on certain tests.

Together, the findings suggest that "nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is not harmful and in fact may enhance favorably children's long-term" mental development, lead researcher Dr. Irena Nulman, of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, told Reuters Health in an email.

As for diclectin, she said, it "alleviates clinical symptoms of morning sickness, may improve women's quality of life during pregnancy and was not found to be associated with" side effects."
Nulman and her colleagues report the findings in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is very common, particularly in the first trimester. Because it is related to changes in particular hormones that are needed for the placenta's development, one theory is that morning sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy.
Past studies have linked morning sickness to lower rates of miscarriage, stillbirth and preterm delivery. Whether it is related to any long-term benefits had been unclear.

The current findings are based on 45 children whose mothers had taken diclectin for morning sickness, 47 whose mothers had suffered morning sickness but not taken the drug, and 29 whose mothers had no nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

All of the children scored within the normal range for mental development, Nulman said. But on average, certain tests scores were higher in the two groups of children whose mothers reported having morning sickness. And scores tended to climb along with the severity of the morning sickness.

It's possible, the researchers write, that the same pregnancy hormones related to morning sickness have positive effects on fetal brain development.

Morning sickness is not always benign, however. A small percentage of pregnant women progress to a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum -- severe, persistent nausea and vomiting that can lead to dehydration, malnutrition and weight loss.

No one knows what causes that disorder, and it may, Nulman noted, have different physiological underpinnings than benign morning sickness.

10 Things you can do to help him bond with the baby in Utero.

  1. Try not to talk about pregnancy just in terms of YOU. He needs to hear you talking about "our baby," "his baby." Ask him questions from early on about what he'd like to do as a dad and what sort of dad he wants to be. Get him to write down his thoughts so that he thinks about it and can reflect on it later.
  2. Share baby's growth. If you are reading in detail about the development of the baby and he isn't, leave him some cute sticky notes around the house, in his brief case or car. Let him know that today "your baby has developed fingernails" or this week "he’s as big as an orange." Get him thinking that you have a real person inside you.
  3. Financial stuff -- there is nothing like writing a will and organizing your finances to make you realize there is change in the wind. Get onto it as early as possible.
  4. Supporting mom is being a good dad!Remind him that whilst he can't do anything directly for the baby that by helping you and supporting you he is, in fact, helping the baby. If you are healthier, happier, and more comfortable, so is the baby.
  5. Share movements. Once the baby starts moving and kicking when you get into bed get him to spoon you with his hand on your tummy and DON'T TALK. Let him lie in the dark and silence and just feel the baby. Many dads I've spoken with have said that when they have felt the baby kick when their partner was asleep it made them feel truly connected for the first time.
  6. Buy him a cookbook with recipes created for pregnancy nutrition. I really believe this is something that has been overlooked. If he knows the health benefits to you and the baby of certain recipes he will get a real buzz out of it. For example a recipe that has ingredients to assist with brain development or muscle growth. How cool!
  7. Tell him about the things that make the baby happy. Whether it’s cooking you a meal, making you a cup of tea, walking together, cuddling or listening to music if he does something with you let him know that the little person in you liked it.
  8. Reassure him that his life isn't about to end. Some men can resent the baby out of fear that it’s going to cause a catastrophic change in their life. Talk about the changes ahead and the adjustments that you need to make but let him know he'll still be able to do whatever it is he loves and wants to do -- maybe just not as often!
  9. Watch Being Dad. Many men need to be "given permission" to feel like it's ok to be emotionally involved with their baby in utero or soon after birth. Listening to other men talk about their experiences and how wonderful being a dad can be is a liberating experience for many guys.
  10. Give the baby a nickname and encourage him to talk to him/her. Not only can it be fun but it's a constant reminder there is a real person in there and having spoken with them for 6 months when they finally meet, I'm certain it’s going to be special.

Prenatal Vitamins & Due Date

Researched from the internet, most doctors (in US) suggested women to take prenatal vitamins once confirmed pregnant. So I start to take the One-a-day Women's Prenatal from today.

Estimated due date is on 29 Nov.
